What Is the Machinist.com RFQ?

Our Request for Quote system lets procurement professionals, engineers, and project managers describe their machining needs and get connected with shops that have the right capabilities, certifications, and capacity. Unlike broker platforms that add 30-50% markups to every job, we connect you directly with shops — you negotiate pricing, timelines, and terms with the people doing the work.

How It Works Today

  1. Submit your request — Describe your part, choose the machining process, upload drawings, and set your timeline. The more detail you provide, the better we can match you.
  2. We review and match — Our team reviews your request and identifies shops from our directory of 2915+ verified machine shops across the United States. We match based on capabilities, certifications, location, and capacity.
  3. Shops contact you directly — Matched shops receive your project details and reach out with quotes. Most buyers hear back within 1-3 business days.
  4. Track your request — Every submission gets a unique tracking code. Use it to check your request status anytime at machinist.com/rfq-status/YOUR-CODE.

What You Can Specify

Machining Process

CNC Milling (3, 4, and 5-axis), CNC Turning, Sheet Metal Fabrication, Welding, Grinding, EDM, Waterjet Cutting, Laser Cutting, Swiss Screw Machining, and more.

Part Details & Drawings

Describe your part, material, approximate dimensions, and key features. Upload CAD files, drawings, or reference documents (PDF, DXF, STEP, IGES, and more).

Quantity & Timeline

Whether it's a one-time prototype or ongoing production, specify how many parts you need and when you need them — including a specific deadline date if applicable.

Certifications Required

Select up to three certifications your project requires — ISO 9001, AS9100D, ITAR, NADCAP, ISO 13485, and others. We match shops that hold the certifications you need.

Geographic Preference

Specify a location and distance radius, or indicate that you're open to shops anywhere in the US or internationally.

Shop Selection

Use our built-in shop finder to search by name, state, capabilities, and certifications. Select up to 5 specific shops, or leave it to us to find the best match.

What Makes Us Different

  • No markups. We don't take a cut of your job. Shops quote you directly at their own prices.
  • Real shops, real people. Our directory of 2915+ machine shops is built from verified business data — not anonymous listings.
  • Capability matching. We don't blast your RFQ to everyone. We match based on what each shop actually does — equipment, certifications, materials, and capacity.
  • Transparent tracking. Every request gets a tracking code so you always know where things stand.
  • Free to use. Submitting an RFQ costs nothing. There are no subscription fees for buyers.

Where We're Headed

Today, our team manually reviews and matches every RFQ. This ensures quality, but it also means response times depend on our bandwidth. Here's what's coming:

  • AI-powered matching — Automated capability analysis to instantly match your request with the most qualified shops based on their equipment, certifications, past work, and location.
  • Real-time quoting — Shops will be able to respond to RFQs directly through the platform, giving you quotes faster and in a standardized format.
  • Shop dashboards — Machine shops will get their own portal to manage incoming RFQs, set availability, and showcase their strengths.
  • Repeat ordering — Reorder from shops you've worked with before in just a few clicks, with full history and pricing context.
  • Expanded coverage — We're continuously adding shops and enriching our data. If you don't find a match today, check back — our network is growing every week.
